Ariola Bacu

Prof.Dr.Ariola Bacu graduated in Biology in 1995 at University of Tirana, Albania, received DSPU and MSc in Biotechnology during 1998-2000 at the Center for Advanced Mediterranean Studies- CIHEAM, Greece, and obtained her PhD in Plant Molecular Biology-Biotechnology, 2003, at University of Tirana, Albania.

She worked at the Institute of Biological Research of the Academy of Sciences of Albania from 2000 to 2005 as a researcher, and form 2005-2008 as head of section of Molecular Biology. In 2008 she moved to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Tirana as the head of the Department of Biotechnology from 2008-2016. She is a senior researcher and lecturer in Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering in undergraduate and post-graduate programs. 

As a researcher she was involved in molecular markers based evaluation of plant biodiversity; Characterization of gene families of importance for the production of secondary metabolites; Studies on modified expression of genes responsible for crops resistance toward environmental stresses, etc.

She has participated in more than 30 international and national RD projects, at 11 of them as coordinator, is coauthor in 5 monographies, author of many publications, two text-books for students, and supervisor of PhDs and MSc students.

Adam Mechler

Dr Mechler has received his PhD at the University of Szeged, Hungary,in 2001, in physics/materials science. His work involved high resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy characterization of laser irradiated carbon surfaces. He spent three years with postdoctoral work at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was involved in several diverse projects including nano-viscosimetry, conductive polymers and transmembrane ionchannel activity. In 2004 he moved to Australia; after a five year fellowship at Monash University in 2009 he became faculty member at La Trobe University. Dr Mechler's primary research interest is the formation of complex nanostructures via intermolecular interactions, with three main focus areas: phospholipid membranes, membrane disrupting antimicrobial peptides, and peptide-based supramolecular frameworks.

Martin Koller

After completing his doctoral thesis under supervision of Prof. Gerhart Braunegg, one of the most eminent pioneers in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) research, Martin Koller was awarded his PhD degree in 2005 from Graz University of Technology, Austria, for his work on PHA production from dairy surplus streams; these activities were part of research in the EU-FP5 granted project WHEYPOL (“Dairy industry waste as source for sustainable polymeric material production”). Afterwards, he became a highly experienced senior researcher in the field of bio-mediated PHA production, encompassing design and development of continuous and discontinuous fermentation processes, and novel downstream processing techniques for sustainable biopolymer recovery from microbial biomass.

His focus of research is enhanced cost-efficiency of PHA production from surplus materials using both eubacteria and halophile archaea as whole cell biocatalysts. He holds numerous research articles in high ranked scientific journals, authored several chapters in biotechnological scientific books, gave a broad number of invited and plenary lectures at international conferences, and is active member of the Editorial Boards of distinguished scientific journals. From 2010 to 2012, he acted as coordinator of the EU-FP7 granted project ANIMPOL (“Biotechnological conversion of carbon containing wastes for eco-efficient production of high added value products”) which investigated the value-added conversion of waste streams from the animal processing industry towards structurally diversified PHA biopolyesters and their marketable follow up products. In addition to biopolymer exploration, he was also active in microalgal research and has long-year experience in biotechnological production of marketable compounds like bioethanol, polysaccharides, lactic acid or polyunsaturated fatty acids from renewable resources by various microorganisms such as yeasts, chlorophyta, bacteria, archaea, fungi or lactobacilli.

Ilham Shahmuradov

He was born January 1, 1958. He is Head of Bioinformatics Laboratory,  Institute of Botany, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and Professor in the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Azerbaijan Medical University. Scientific fields of interest are: structure and evolution of eukaryotic genomes; organization and expression of genes in eukaryotic genomes; organelle-to-nucleus gene transfer in plants; development of bioinformatics tools and databases.

He has published 60 papers. In collaboration with scientists from USA, UK, Russia and Pakistan, he developed a set of bioinformatics tools, including computer programs for identification of RNA polymerase II promoters and poly(A) sites. He is Secretary General of Azerbaijan Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists.

Alexander Kilchevsky

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Principles and techniques for ecological plant breeding with use of modern biotechnology approaches and methods aimed at developing high productive ecologically resistant plant cultivars. Engineering methods applied to plant cells. Education and training of specialists in genetics, molecular biology and modern biotechnology is under Prof. Kilchevsky intent attention too.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Director, Head of the Laboratory of Ecological Genetics and Biotechnology, Institute of Genetics and Cytology, National Academy of Sciences, 2004 – present. Prof. Kilchevsky is also a head of the DNA-Biotechnology Centre and the Republican Centre of Genomic Biotechnologies at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Prof. Kilchevsky has worked out the theoretical fundamentals of biotechnology in Belarus and developed above 15 tomato cultivars registered in the Cultivar State Register. He is a developer of some modified techniques for DNA genotype identification of tomatoes and sugar beet based on molecular markers. Significant research results have been achieved by Prof. Kilchevsky and his research team in the following areas: investigation of main principles and use of modern biotechnology techniques for ecological plant breeding, aimed at developing high productive and ecologically resistant plant cultivars; development of an effective seed-growing system for tomato hybrids based on the functional male sterility. Prof. Kilchevsky has revealed the basic regularities of genotype-environment interactions at different breeding stages and developed a conception of basic environment complex for plant breeding.

He was a principal investigator when some advanced techniques in plant cell engineering and biotechnology were worked out in Belarus. They are as follows: gametic methods of tomato breeding for resistance to biotic and/or abiotic stresses; optimization of the basic stages of some cloned cultivars; methods of tomato marker-assisted selection for genes determining fruit quality and shelf life.

Vincenzo Costigliola

Vincenzo Costigliola graduated in Medicine from the University of Naples in 1972 and with distinction, in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care from the University of Pisa in 1978. Completed studies in Rheumatology, Dermatology, Proctology, Oncology, Surgery, Drugs Abuse, Emergency Treatment, Disaster Action, Hospital Organization, Medical Teaching Methodology and Computer and Audio-Visual Training for the Medical Profession. Professional experience ranges from senior military positions as Chief of Medical Services in the Italian Navy, responsibility of the outpatients clinic of the Shape Hospital in Belgium and since 1972 family practice in Italy and Belgium. Paolo Bartolini

Ph.D in Chemistry (Pavia, Italy, 1969), Post-doctorate in Biochemistry (University of Iowa, USA, 1971-74), Post-doctorate in DNA Recombinant Techniques (University of Pavia, 1988-89). He is an Italian citizen, resident in Brazil.

He has been working at IPEN-CNEN/University of São Paulo (Brazil) since 1975 as a teacher and post-graduate program supervisor, carrying out researches especially in the field of the “Synthesis, purification, characterization and applications of pituitary hormones obtained by DNA recombinant techniques and of animal models for gene therapy”. He also carried out 17 working stages or scientific visits in 9 different countries, being responsible for about 20 national or international research projects. He is still the Scientific Supervisor of the Hormone Division of the Biotechnology Center of this Institution. He published 87 papers in major international journals, 11 book chapters and deposited 5 patents related to products or processes. His publications in the ISI Web of Science can be easily seen entering with author (Bartolini P) and address (Brazil).

Lejla Pojskic

Lejla Pojskic works in the field of Human molecular genetics at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her research interests are into the molecular genetic basis of complex traits and novel genetic markers. Since 2005, she leads a research and diagnostics Lab for Human Genetics. Since 2013, she holds associate professorship at University of Sarajevo in the subject of Biotechnology and Genetics. As part of job description, provides support in genetic testing and advising to patients, families, and individuals at risk of genetic-related disorders. She is an active member of of Genetics Society in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Societty of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and European Society of Human Genetics.

Dancho Danalev

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dancho Danalev has graduated at the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM), Sofia, Bulgaria, in the direction of “Organic chemical technologies”, specialization “Organic synthesis of biological active compounds”. Dr. Danalev is a Chemical engineer and a M.Sc. in Chemistry (1999). He is a PhD in Organic Chemistry (2003, UCTM, Sofia, Bulgaria), worked on the synthesis and structure-activity relationship of biological active peptides as inhibitors and activators of different enzymatic systems. From 2002 Dr. Danalev is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry at UCTM. In 2006-2007 he spent 10 months postdoctoral research position at the laboratory guided by Prof. Vincent Ferrières, Ecole National Superior de Chimie de Rennes, France. There Dr. Danalev develops synthesis of glycofuranosides. Two years later in 2009, during 6 months period, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dancho Danalev is invited lecturer in the University of Cergy-Pontoise, France, ECIME laboratory, where he works with Prof. Pascal Griesmar and Prof. Stephane Serfaty on the design of new hybrid organic-inorganic materials comprising biomolecules. In 2009, as a part of the project with the National Scientific Fund of Bulgaria Dr. Danalev starts his second post-doctoral specialization in laboratory SOSCO, University of Cergy-Pontoise under supervising of Prof. Jacques Augé and Prof. Nadège Lubin-Germain. During 10 months period of this post-doc position he worked on the synthesis of glycopeptides with antiviral and antiparasitic properties. Since 2012 Dr. Danalev is an Associated Professor in the Biotechnology Department of UCTM. His teaching concerns with the organic, bioorganic chemistry, bioanalytical technics for analysis and separation of biomolecules (HPLC, GC, MS, and electrophoresis) as well as pharmaceutical biotechnology and molecular design of biological active compounds. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dancho Danalev is headed 5 PhD students and more than 60 diploma thesis for bachelor and master degree. As researcher, Dr. Danalevs’ work is related to the synthesis and investigation of structure-activity relationships of biomolecules especially peptides, glycosylamino acids and glycopeptides. He has more than 60 research articles.

Satya Prakash

Dr. Satya Prakash is a Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Cells and Organs, Physiology, Experimental Medicine and Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dr. Prakash research interest includes microbiome, probiotics, biomedicine, cancer microencapsulation, targeted delivery of therapeutic molecules and other biomedical applications. Specifically, his team is developing biotherapeutics for use in cancer, coronary heart, liver, gastrointestinal and other diseases and develop novel wound healing device and next generation of cardiac stents.

Dr. Prakash is leading author of more than 300 research papers and several book chapters, research and other scholarly articles. His publication list includes 70 approved/pending patents and 3 edited books.

Dr. Prakash is the winner of more than 30 international awards including “Medial for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Science”, Overseas Scholar, Fraser, Monat and McPherson Award, Canadian Institute of Health Research Investigator Award, FRSQ Chercheure-Boursière and other awards. Dr. Prakash is listed in editorial boards of several distinguished journals. He holds MSc, M. Tech (BHU, India) and a Ph.D. from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dr. Prakash is co-founder of MangoGen Pharma, Micropharma, and Proviva Pharma and currently serves as President, Director and various other positions.

Dr. Francisco Fuentes is Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Forestry, Engineering and Medicine Faculties at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Dr. Fuentes has a B.S. in Agronomy (Crop Science) from University of Concepcion (Chile) and a Ph.D. in Agroforestry and Veterinary Sciences (Molecular Genetics) from University of Chile. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (USA). His research is primarily focused on development a quinoa breeding program under the extreme conditions of the Atacama Desert as well as in Mediterranean areas of central-southern Chile. The main objective of this breeding program is to develop improved lines of quinoa with high grain yield and nutritional content through selection and evaluation of native germplasm using conventional tools and DNA markers. He is an International Quinoa Expert for the Administration of Foreign Expert of Jilin Province (China) and a quinoa consultant for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Chile. Dr. Fuentes has published several papers on quinoa studies and dietary phytochemicals associated with Nrf2–ARE pathway activation. He is also an Editorial Board member for scientific journals and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Agronomy.

Qun Sun

Dr. Qun Sun is currently a professor in the Department of Biotechnology within the College of Life Sciences and a joint professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Sichuan University, China. Dr. Sun received her BSc and PhD. degree in Microbiology from Sichuan University, China and her MS in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut, USA. She worked on food microbiology in Sichuan Institute of Light Industry since 1989 and later went to the University of Connecticut in 1995 to work on food chemistry. She joined Sichuan University in 2001, with affiliation in multiple associations, including as the chair of Sichuan Society of Microbiology, the member of the standing committee of the Chinese Association of Animal Products, as well as Sichuan Food Safety Committee. During the last 32 years in the field of microbial biotechnology and food science research, Dr. Sun has published more than 230 scientific papers, 3 book chapters, 50 conference abstracts, and 17 filed patents. She has won more than 40 grants, including Horizon 2020, the national and provincial as well as extended programs. She has won multiple teaching and research awards at national and provincial levels. Her current research is focused on the food biotechnology, especially the risk evaluation, and quality improvement of fermented foods and their safety control.

Anita Slavica

Anita Slavica was born in 1970 in Šibenik, Croatia. After degrees in Biotechnology (BSc and MSc) at Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, she took PhD in Technical Chemistry at Graz University of Technology, Austria. She habilitated in 2006 in Physiology of Industrial Microorganisms at Department of Biochemical Engineering, the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb. Since 2011 she is working as Associate Professor in Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering, Industrial Microbiology, Malting and Brewing Technology at the Department. She is lecturer at „Bioprocess Engineering“ and „Molecular Biotechnology“ MSc degree studies programme and „Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering“ PhD programme, researcher in several national/international research projects, supervisor of undergraduate and graduate students, and member of international conferences organizing and scientific comities. Scientific fields of her interest are: mass spectrometry; development and application of analytical methods related to monitoring of sustainable bioprocesses for production of biochemicals; protein expression, purification and characterization; enzyme kinetics; biochemical engineering and industrial microbiology; TT and IPR.

Ivana Marova

Prof. Ivana Marova is a regular professor of biochemistry at Faculty of Chemistry, Brno University of Technology (FCH BUT). At this time she is a Head of Department of Food Chemistry and Biotechnology, FCH BUT. She has been profiled as a specialist in the field of microbial biochemistry and biotechnology, food biochemistry, bioanalysis and utilization/valorization of waste substrates to production of high value-added products.  She has worked as leader of research groups in frame of national and international projects from 2002 till present.  At this time she is a head of the Biotechnology and Biomaterials group of Materials Research Centre FCH BUT in Brno (established in 2010 as a regional centre of excellence); she is a leader of research group working on development of patented HYDAL biotechnology awarded by Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation Award (2015). She was applicant and co-applicant of many scientific projects (ESF, GACR, TACR, OP VaVpI). She is author of about 100 original scientific papers, 4 books/chapters, 2 accepted and 4 applied patents, 2 industrial applications and co-author of about 300 contributions on international conferences. She is supervisor of doctoral students DSP (more than 20 successfully defensed PhD theses). Michel Salzet

Since 1998, Professor Michel Salzet is the director of the CNRS then INSERM Laboratory at the University of Lille 1. PRISM is now an European Associated Laboratory with department of Cancer and surgery of Imperial College of London and name, Lancet. Pr. Salzet received his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Lille 1 in 1993, where he has served as Chair of Immunology since 1997. After his PhD, Pr. Salzet worked as Associate Researcher for one year at the Institute of Neurosciences at Stony Brook University (USA), and was subsequently nominated as Senior Research Scientist at the Beth Israel, Mind Body Institute of Harvard Medical School. He became a member of the Institut Universitaire de France in 1998. Pr. M. Salzet was member from 2009 to 2012 of the core group and the standing committee of the LESC of European Science Foundation and member of management committee of the forward looks in Personalized Medicine for the European Citizen. From 2009 to 2012, he has been nominated at the CNRS as a scientific delegate at the international.  Pr. Salzet is an expert in the field of Neuroimmunology and Proteomic. Salzet has published 274 original articles and 20 book chapters, 4 vulgarization articles and 158 proceedings. He was invited in 84 international conferences and seminars. He is co-founder of IMABIOTECH SAS in 2009 and CLIC-IMAGING platform 2014. He supervised 28 PhD. Pr. Salzet currently has 16 patents. After being the co-director of the doctoral school in Biology and Heath of Lille from 1998 to 2003, he created in 2000, tthe Proteomics Master Degree Program of Lille, which is now recognized as an EU Master. He is presently distinguished Professor (PRECE2) with a chair in immunology since 1997. He received in 1993 the Wicart Hagelstein Medaillon and in 2003 the “Grand Prix des Sciences” by the Science Academy of the Sciences and Letters of Lille. He got the Altran (2014) and MATWIN (2015) innovation prices.

Anargyros Moulas

Professor Anargyros Moulas is currently Dean of the School of Agriculture and Food Technology and Nutrition of the Technological Education Institute T.E.I. of Thessaly, Greece and head of the laboratory of chemistry and biochemistry. He has a degree in Chemistry (BSc, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Ioannina, Greece. After a post-doc in Biochemistry at the University of Ioannina, he was elected assistant professor at the Technological Education Institute T.E.I. of Larissa, Greece in 1998. In 2000 he was visiting scientist at the Medical College of Virginia, USA and between 2001 and 2002 researcher at the Human Nutrition Laboratory of the USDA, Beltsville MD, USA. In 2005 was elected professor and from 2009 to 2012 he was president of the Department of Nutrition of T.E.I. of Larissa. Between 2012 and 2014 he was visiting researcher at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (currently Rutgers Biomedical), Newark, USA. Has published several papers on fat soluble vitamins and oxidative stress and holds one international patent.

His research interests include health aspects and molecular mechanisms of action of vitamin D and other fat soluble vitamins, functional foods, antioxidants and oxidative stress, controlled release of drugs and chromatographic/spectroscopic methods.

Miklos Kellermayer

Miklós Kellermayer graduated in medicine (1988) and earned his PhD (1998) at the University of Pécs, Hungary. Having had international research experience in single-molecule biophysics (1989-1993 University of Washington, Seattle; 1995-1997 Washington State University, Pullman; 1998 University of Oregon, Eugene; 2001 University of California, Berkeley), he currently focuses on nanobiotechnology, biomolecular mechanics, cytoskeletal nanobiology, protein folding and misfolding, and the nanomechanics of lipid and viral systems. Since 2008 he is the chairman of the Department of Biophysics and Radiation Biology at Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. He served as the university's Vice Rector for Science, Innovation and International Affairs (2009-2012) and the Vice Dean of the Medical School (2013-2015). He established and supervises the Georg von Békésy Biophysics Research Center that houses state-of-the-art instrumentation for the imaging and manipulation from single molecules to small-animal organisms. He is currently the president of the Biophysics Subgroup of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Vice President of the Hungarian Biophysical Society. He was recently elected the Dean of the Medical Faculty at Semmelweis University for the period of 2019-2014. He has tutored 11 PhD graduates. He is a Howard Hughes Medical School International Alumnus and has authored more than one hundred original research papers.

M.N.V. Prasad is Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Hyderabad, India. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor for eight books (John Wiley and Sons Inc.New York; CRC Press, Boca Raton; Springer-Verlag Heidelberg; Narosa Publishing House, New Delhi; Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht; Marcel Dekker, New York).  Published 216 articles, 134 research papers in peer reviewed journals and 82 book chapters and conference proceedings in the broad area of  Environmental botany and heavy metal stress in plants. He received the B.Sc. (1973) and M.Sc. (1975) degrees from Andhra University, India, and the Ph.D. degree (1979) in botany from the University of Lucknow, India.

He made outstanding contributions to “Plant-Metal interactions” from molecules to ecosystem. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India awarded the 2007 Pitamber Pant National Environment Fellowship in recognition of  his  research contribution to the field of Environmental Sciences.

Mohammad Amin Hejazi

Mohammad Amin Hejazi was born March 27, 1970. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from University of Tabriz and Tarbiat Modaress University, respectively. He made Ph.D on Food Biotechnology at Wageningen University, The Netherlands in 2003. After completing a Postdoctoral period at the same university, he came back to Iran an appointed as the head of Microbial Biotechnology and Biosafety Department at Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII).

He is Founder of Food Biotechnology Department and Head of Branch for Northwest and West region, ABRII since 2007. He is taking some other responsibilities to promote biotechnology sector at national and regional levels.

He coordinated and implemented several research projects, and published 64 research papers in peer reviewed journals, 7 patents, a book, and 127 conference proceedings and book chapters. He gives lectures at different universities for postgraduate students. He received several international and national awards for his outstanding achievements in the field of biotechnology.

Gary Henehan

Background

Professor Henehan has experience of research and development in academia and in the food, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He lectures in biochemical, toxicological and pharmacological aspects of Food Science and Environmental Health. His research includes collaborative work with the School of Biochemistry and Immunology at Trinity College Dublin and the School of Biotechnology, Dublin City University.

 

Research Interests

  • Professor Henehan has been involved, along with Dr Bourke and Dr Dunne of the School in the development of novel antimicrobial agents from carbohydrate fatty acid conjugates. He is also involved, with Dr Frias of this School in the isolation of novel lipases for applications in organic synthesis.

 

Current Research Projects

  • Isolation of Novel Lipase Enzymes for Applications in Biocatalysis.
  • Role of the Kvβ2 subunit of the Shaker potassium channel. This subunit is involved in the modulation of channel activity in excitable cells.
  • Pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastritis: This organism colonises the gastric mucosa and is thought to cause gastritis by production of toxic aldehydes from dietary precursors. The project is examining pathways of metabolism of toxic aldehydes in H pylori with a view to modelling the exposure of the gastric mucosa to such aldehydes. The project is funded by the Health Research Board.
  • Synthesis of fatty acid sugar esters: The esterification of fatty acids to sugars has led to the production of useful food additives. In particular these compounds have been employed as emulsifiers. More recently it has been found that these compounds have useful antibacterial properties. Current work in this area in collaboration with Dr Seamas Cassidy is examining esterification of fatty acids to lactose. Chemical synthesis using organotin compounds and enzymatic synthesis using immobilised lipases is being investigated.

Robert Marks

Prof. Robert S. Marks, (PhD, Weizmann Institute and postdoctorate University of Cambridge) has developed biosensors at the Ben Gurion University, Israel, in the last 15 years resulting in over 75 publications, 20 chapters, 4 granted patents, and founded 4 start-up companies. His work consists in the development of fiber-optic immunosensors (Ebola, Dengue, West Nile, Rift Valley fever viruses, and Hepatitis C, Brucella), and fiber-optic bioreporters biosensors for water monitoring (genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, heavy metals, endocrine disrupting compounds).

Other projects consist in nanotoxicity, development of a reverse genetics cell reporter assay to influenza, a bioreporter panel for the discovery of antibiotics from difficult to grow microorganisms, the discovery of quorum sensor inhibitors as well as epitopes from ebola sudan virus for diagnostics; nanobiotechnology, including nanolithography, nanometer scale structured surfaces for optical enhancement in fluorescence, Raman and infra-red, the creation of tailored nanomaterials including conductive or affinity hydrogels. He has chaired 13 conferences, has given 57 invited and 45 contributed lectures at conferences, 130 posters presentation with colleagues and students, and 130 academic lectures around the world.

He is an adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland and an invited Professor several Universities in, USA (1), Finland (1), France (3) and Italy (1).

University of Pisa

Fabrizio Bruschi was born in Pisa in 1954. He graduated in 1979 in Medicine, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, score: 110/110 cum laude; Haematology Specialization, University of Pisa, Italy, score: 70/70 cum laude. He obtained the Certificat d'Etudes Superieures in Immunologie et Pathologie Parasitaires at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France. Researcher since 1984, confirmed since 1987, then Associate Professor in General Pathology, Medical Faculty, University of Perugia, Italy (1992-1997), then University of Pisa, Italy until 2002 when he has obtained the position of Professor of Parasitology in the Faculty of Medicine of the same University. Since then he is also in charge of the Parasitology Sector of University Microbiology Laboratory of the University Hospital in Pisa.

The interests of Prof. F. Bruschi are represented mainly by host-parasite relations in helminth infections such as trichinellosis of which different aspects, both experimental and clinical have been studied. Prof. Bruschi has been coordinator of different research projects both at local and at national (MURST and Ministry of Health) levels on trichinellosis. He was appointed as 1st Vice-President of the European Federation of Parasitologists since 2000 up to 2008 and in virtue of this position he has participated to the Scientific Consultation Group of ECDC in Stockholm.

He participated to the Committee of the International Commission on trichinellosis for the compilation of the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of human trichinellosis, as well as in that for the preparation of the guidelines for the animal and human serology. Recently, he was involved in the preparation of the W.H.O.-F.A.O.-O.I.E. guidelines for human trichinellosis. At present he is Vice-President of the Società Italiana di Parassitologia and member of the Executive Committee of the International Commission on trichinellosis. Since 2010 he is member of ESCMID and he participates to the study group of Clinical Parasitology.

He is author or co-author of over 130 publications among which chapters in books from international publishers and Editor of books or journal supplements. He is Associate/Receiving Editor for Medical Parasitology of the journal Parassitologia and he is in the editorial board of the new Journal of Infectious Diseases and Immunity and of the advisory board for Clinical Parasitology of the journal Turkiye Klinikleri Journal of Medical Sciences.

Professor Bajram BERISHA, (born in Suharekë, Republic of Kosova) is an Albanian researcher and international university professor of Technical  University of Munich (Germany), University of Prishtina (Kosovo) and Agriculture University of Tirana (Albania). Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Bajram Berisha, graduated from the University of Prishtina (UP), Kosovo (BSc., 1986), University of Ljubljana, Slovenia (MSc., 1992) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany (PhD, 2001 and habilitation, 2007). He is a senior scientist with a long research experience in the area of animal physiology, genetics and biotechnology and author of numerous original research articles and other publications published in the best journal with high impact factor (his current h-index >30). Professor Bajram Berisha has a special interest in field of animal biotechnology. His research work is concentrated in the very important steps in the regulation of final follicle growth and especially of angiogenesis during follicle development, periovulation as well as corpus luteum formation and function. Currently he focuses on the action of locally produced angiogenic and lymphangiogenic factors in ovary during different physiological stages. From 1996-2008 he worked at the Technical University of Munich and since 2008 he is full Professor at the University of Prishtina in Kosovo in field of animal genetics and biotechnology. Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia

Dijana Plaseska-Karanfilska

Prof Dijana Plaseska-Karanfilska graduated from the Medical School in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia in 1987. She received her PhD from the Medical Faculty, Limburg University, Maastricht, the Netherlands in 1994. She has been employed at the Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (RCGEB) “Georgi D. Efremov”,Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) since 1988, where currently she holds a position of senior scientist and Head of the laboratories. Since 2010 she is a professor at the “St. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje, R. Macedonia and is involved in undergraduate, master and PhD studies at the Faculties of Pharmacy and Natural Sciences.

She has made significant contribution to the molecular characterization of different monogenic diseases in the Republic of Macedonia. She has been engaged in the molecular diagnostics of inherited, malignant and infectious diseases and has contributed to the translation of a number of molecular genetic tests to clinical practice.

She was coordinating the FP7 REGPOT project, entitled “National Reference Centre for Genomics and Proteomics - MACPROGEN”, financed by the European Commission in the period from April 2009 to June 2012. This project has enabled establishment of a technological platform for high throughput genomics and proteomics research in Macedonia and has resulted in strengthening of national and regional research capacities in these fields. Her recent research interest focuses in reproductive genetics, such as male infertility, spontaneous abortion, rapid and non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and breast cancer.

Karla Santacruz-Gomez

Professor Santacruz graduated in Chemical Biology in 2007 from the University of Sonora in Mexico. She received a specialization in Immunohematology and a Master's Degree in Health Sciences. In 2013, she obtained a PhD from the Centro de Investigación de Materiales Avanzados and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain. In 2015, she performed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego.

She works as a full-time professor at the Universidad de Sonora in Mexico. Additionally, she holds key leadership position as a women in STEM mentorship, President of the Research Ethics Committee, Coordinator of academic engagement and chairperson of the Departmental Board of Physics. Her research interests are focused on Radiobiology and nanobiomedicine, focusing the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for breast cancer detection and treatment.

She serves as a reviewer for multiple journals and has authored numerous publications. She is an active speaker at conferences in the fields of nanomaterials, physics, and biology. Furthermore, she has successfully supervised undergraduate, master's, and doctoral theses. In recognition of her exceptional achievements, Professor Santacruz was honored with an honoris causa doctorate from the International Organization for Inclusive Education in 2022.

Mark Nuijten

Dr. Mark Nuijten trained as a physician and worked in clinical practice before obtaining an international M.B.A. from Erasmus University, Rotterdam, with a focuson financial management. He obtained his PhD in health economics (2003) on the thesis “In search of more confidence in health economic modelling” at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. Dr. Nuijten has become one of the top health economic experts over the last decade, reflected in more than 180 publications and leading positions in scientific societies and editorial boards. Dr. Nuijten was Board Director of ISPOR (2002-2004) and Chair of the Management Board of Value in Health (2002-2004). He was member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Value in Health. Dr. Nuijtenis internationally renowned for achievements in mathematical modelling, also reflected in many publications and positive reimbursement decisions in many markets for innovative medications by institutions, like NICE in England.

He is a pioneer in the field of healthcare innovation in biotechnology and nutrition, and has been the first classical health economist successfully applying and developing sales forecast methodologies for valuation of biotechnology companies. For example, developing a Pricing Matrix Model for research in early phase development and a Financial Valuation Algorithm for the assessment of the future sales of a new, innovative medicinal product.

Dr Nuijten is pursuing development of economic modelling and broadening its application in health care and finance. His models successfully contributed to positive reimbursement decisions by health authorities in many countries, (for example, SMC in Scotland, TLV in Sweden, and The National Health   Care Institute in The Netherlands).

He is academic supervisor of PhD programs at the Universities of Maastricht and Groningen in The Netherlands and founder of the ISPOR Special Interest Group on nutrition-economics.

Dr. Nuijten owns and runs A2M (Ars Accessus Medica - http://a2m.nl/), whichprovides international consulting services in health economics, pricing, market access and valuation in biotechnology. A2M is a partner of Minerva, an international health economics consortium. A2M established other global collaborations with key opinion formers in key European markets, the US, Canada and Japan. A2M is comfortable with multi-country projects. The current A2M project portfolio reflects its long-time international coverage with health economic models being developed for Russia, Italy, Mexico, UK, France, Netherlands and Belgium.

Prior to setting up A2M, Dr. Nuijten was a partner with MEDTAP International. As a VP Business Development for Europe he established global Pricing and Reimbursement Consultancy Services for MEDTAP. Before MEDTAP, Dr. Nuijten was a Managing Director of the Quintiles office in the Netherlands.

Dr. Bhatti is a Human Molecular Geneticist and working as an assistant professor at NUST. She directs an immunogenetics molecular laboratory. She is also Head of Department Healthcare Biotechnology. Dr. Bhatti received her PhD degree in Human Molecular Genetics from the Quaid-e-Azam University, Pakistan in 2007. She is young scientist and has ~9 years of experience working on the molecular genetics of common diseases of public health importance, including coronary artery disease, diabetes type 2, and arthritis.  She has published more than 40 scientific research articles with IF of more than 80 and her team has contributed in the identification of several genes for T2D and rheumatoid arthritis. She has received more than 06 R& D grants and published two book chapters.

 She has been supervised/completed the thesis/dissertation work of many PhD, MS, BS students. Dr Bhatti is also the Founding Editor of NUST Journal of Natural Sciences (ISSN: 2072-46592, 2010-Present).

Our research lab contributes not only toward the enhanced understanding about the functional biology of genetic disorders, but also helps in the field of diagnostic and developments of therapies. The lab is mainly focused on investigation of susceptibility genes that influence important human traits responsible for immunological genetic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type 1 & 2 etc. Overall objective is to understand genetic controls of hereditary diseases, especially those which are specific to immune disorders, and how they may control gene expression.

Isabel Belo concluded the Graduation in Chemical Engineering at University of Porto, Portugal, and concluded the PhD in 2000 in Chemical and Biological Engineering at University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. She is Assistant Professor at the Biological Engineering Department of Engineering School of University of Minho where she collaborates in several Graduation and Master Degrees in Biological and Biomedical Engineering and in Biotechnology. She is a staff researcher of the Centre of Biological Engineering-CEB, belonging to the Biosystems group (https://www.ceb.uminho.pt/biosystems). Isabel Belo is the Director of the Bioprocess and Biosystems Laboratory of CEB and is the Director of the Doctoral Program of Chemical and Biological Engineering of University of Minho. Her main research activities are related to Bioprocess Engineering, particularly bioprocesses development and optimization and fermentation technologies. She supervised 7 Post-Doc researchers, 9 PhD thesis concluded and more than 40 Master students. She participated and coordinated several scientific projects with external financial support. Dr. Dana Tapaloaga is Full Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bucharest. She took her PhD in Veterinary Medicine in 2004 in the field of Animal Reproduction Biotechnology, and her MSc in 1999 (Reproduction Bio Techniques and Biotechnologies) and 1996 (Milk production, processing and trading).

Professional teaching experience area: Milk and meat obtaining technologies, Animal Production Systems, Animal Genetics, Animal breeding.

Current Research interests:  laboratory and economic efficiency researches on bull, buffalo and boar semen; computerized studies on bull and boar semen; laboratory technologies for reproduction biotechnology in breeds preserving; morphologic and hormonal modifications in cows with puerperal disorders; certification and preserving the genetic potential in Mangalitza breed by biotechnological methods.

Professor Nikolai Zhelev is an expert in Medical Biotechnology with extensive experience both in academia and the biopharmaceutical industry. He is an honorary Professor in eight universities in the UK, China, Bulgaria and Russia. Professor Zhelev has published three books, five book chapters and more than 100 research papers and patents in the field of DNA damage response, cell cycle regulation and drug discovery and development in oncology and cardiology. He is working with biopharmaceutical and biotech companies on the development of new drugs against cancer and cardiac hypertrophy. Professor Zhelev and been President of the International BioDiscovery Federation, Managing Editor of BioDiscovery – the first open access international scientific journal in the field of Life Sciences and Medicine in Scotland and a member of the editorial boards of fourteen international journals.

Viktor Nedovic

Dr. Viktor Nedovic is full professor at Deptartment of Food Technology and Biochemistry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, Republic of Serbia.

His research areas belong to biotechnology, food technology, and biochemical engineering. As author and co-author he has published over 400 articles, out of which more than 80 papers published in SCI journals and 30 as book chapters. In addition, he has edited four books for the renowned scientific publishers (Kluwer and Springer). His articles have been cited more than 1700 times, his h-index is 23 (Google Scholar). He has been coordinating or participating in more than 50 reserach and networking projects, out of which 30 are international ones, including four FP7, two FP6, five EUREKA projects, four COST actions, etc. He has visited and established cooperation with a dozen of universities and institutes all over the world.

Prof. Viktor Nedovic is founder and president of the Serbian Association of Food Technologists (SAFT) and coordinator of Serbian National Technology Platform “Food for Life”. In 2015 he become an associate member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia (AESS). Besides it, he is a member of numerous national and international professional and scientific organizations, like: International Society of Food Engineering, ISFE; European Federation of Food Science and Technology, EFFoST (in the period 2007-2011 and again from 2013 he has been the EFFoST Executive Committee member); European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (General Secretary of Regional Section Serbia), EHEDG; European Academy of Food Engineering (EAFE). Prof Juraj Krajcovic

Dr. Juraj Krajcovic is currently Professor of Molecular Biology at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences University of SS Cyril & Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. Till January 2017 his scientific and pedagogical career was primarily connected with the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. Here he graduated in Biology in 1978, obtained his PhD in 1987 and was teaching different subjects in this area to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Within years 1997-2011 he was a director of the Institute of Cell Biology and Biotechnology there. His favorite research object/model organism is the flagellate Euglena gracilis especially its plastids. Polona Znidaršic Plazl

Prof. Dr. Polona Znidaršic Plazl is employed at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of University of Ljubljana as a professor of biotechnology. She graduated in Chemical Engineering, obtained her Master degree in Biochemistry and her PhD at University of Ljubljana in 2000. Among research activities performed at several academic and industrial institutions in USA and EU, she spent half a year at Oregon State University as a Fulbright scholar in 2014/15. Her recent major research interests are biotransformations, the application of microreactor technology in biotechnology and microbial production of enzymes. She was Principal Investigator of 2 EU FP7 projects in the field of microbioreactor development. Among others, she is a Co-chair of the series of International Conferences on Implementation of Microreactor Technology in Biotechnology (IMTB) and a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Session on Applied Biocatalysis (ESAB) of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB).

Prof Oscar Vicente

Oscar Vicente graduated in Biochemistry in 1976 and obtained his PhD in Sciences in 1983 in Madrid (Spain). After a three-year postdoctoral period at the Friedrich-Miescher Institut in Basel (Switzerland), Oscar Vicente moved in 1988 to the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics, University of Vienna (Austria), where he established and led a research group working on different aspects of plant reproductive biology and its biotechnological applications, and on the molecular characterization of pollen allergens and plant MAP kinases. As Assistant Professor from 1991 to 1996, he was responsible for several courses of Experimental Genetics taught at the Faculty of Sciences. Oscar Vicente returned to Spain in 1996 to join the faculty of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he is currently a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Department of Biotechnology, teaching different subjects in this area to students of Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering. His research interest focuses on studying plant responses to abiotic stress and stress tolerance mechanisms in the context of climate change. Oscar Vicente has published over 170 ISI-indexed scientific papers, most in the category of Plant Science. He is Vice-president and coordinator for Spain of the European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association (EBTNA) and is included in the ‘Top-100’ Spanish scientists in Plant Science and Agronomy (Research.com). In 2017, he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Cluj-Napoca (Romania).

He was born May 2, 1961. He took undergraduate degree at Erciyes University, Faculty of Medicine in 1985. He made Ph.D. on Medical Genetics at Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics, University of Glasgow/Scotland in 1994 and got Professor Title in 2003. He is founder and head of Medical Genetics Department at Erciyes University and he has been currently carrying out various administrative tasks since 1996.

He took part as Project Coordinator and Assistant Investigator in many research projects and many prepared articles out of them have been publishing in international journals since 1995. He is a lecturer at European University Consortium, Job Creation Oriented Biotechnology for first level degree and master program students, since 2006. Iza has an MSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Silesia, Poland completed in 1990. Within biosciences her research first focused on anatomy and histology (interactions between heavy metals and enzymatic activity in brain tissue). In 1991 she took a position as a junior research worker in the Institute of Polymer Chemistry at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze, Silesia, with a special interest in the biodegradability of different synthetic polymer blends. After one year there she decided to take a PhD researcher/lecturer post at the University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland with a special interest in microbial biotechnology concerning the production of biodegradable polymers by bacteria under different environmental conditions. She completed her PhD in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland. After that in 2000, she joined the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. Since then, her research is focused on the cost-effective synthesis of new biomaterials using bacterial biopolymers, produced from bacteria using eco-sustainable feedstock and their chemical derivatization which can transform the crude polymer into a range of highly valuable products. Her research also focuses on the application of biomaterials for drug delivery systems and the use of antimicrobial agents in wound dressing

She has published numerous research papers (80+) in highly ranked scientific journals, authored several chapters in biotechnological books. Iza has co-edited two books, and she has more than 90 conference proceedings. Iza has an active research group and has supervised successfully to completion above 60+ postgraduate students to date. Her h-index is 28, and her work has been cited more than 3000 times.

Iza has also given a broad number of invited lectures at international conferences. She has coordinated and participated to funded research projects at the EU as well as national level around biopolymers, nanoparticles and bioactive cements. Iza teaches on a wide variety of microbiology and biotechnology courses, both undergraduate and postgraduate level where she puts her knowledge and experience to good effect. Acad. of Sci. of Ukraine, long time in Inst. of Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering (1989-2008). He was a visiting scientist at Univ. of Freiburg (1997), Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Ottawa (1998), John Innes Center, Norwich (1998-2003), Antwerpen Univ. (2005-2006), invited professor at Schiller Univ., Jena (2001).

Research activity of Ya. Blume is aimed at cell biology, genomics and biotechnology of plant cytoskeleton and cell signalling as well as a development of new tools for molecular biotechnology, creation of plants with novel traits, especially for biofuel production. In the field of cell biology he is focused on cellular and molecular signalling mechanisms underlying the influence of (a)biotic  factors on plant cells and investigation of the role of cytoskeletal structures in these processes. He analyzes the role and the place of cytoskeleton (microtubules and microfilaments) in the response of plant cell to ultraviolet (UV-B) irradiation, cold, high temperatures, heavy metals, herbicides with antimitotic activity as well as in the autophagy mechanisms. Such posttranslational modifications of plant α- and/or β-tubulin as phosphorylation, polyglutamylation, acetylation and tyrosine nitration were identified.

During last decade new tools of structural bioinformatics have been intensively developed by Ya. Blume and introduced for the identification of key cytoskeletal proteins involved in plant cell cycle regulation; 3D-modelling and the functional study of of cytoskeleton-related proteins; creation of the databases and the search of low-molecular weight compounds with high affinity to targeted cytoskeletal proteins, plant and bacterial FtsZ-proteins, protein kinases and phosphatases; the molecular design of biologically active compounds and their high throughput screening in silico. Original structural biological approaches for 3D-modelling of plant tubulin and other cytoskeletal proteins have been developed.

Important part of his efforts is concentrated on such plant molecular genetics, genomics and molecular biotechnological investigations as the development of the molecular markers for genes related to specific agronomic traits, including QTL-loci; the development and implementation of the molecular genetic approaches for identification of wheat and barley resistant genes to different pathogens (leaf, yellow and stem rust resistance genes, namely); the screening of the existing wheat and barley collections for presence resistance genes to these deseases; the study of the genetic diversity of wild relatives of cultivated cereals (e.g., Aegilops sp.) as a potential source of useful genes.

Ya. Blume conducting out the projects directed on the improvement of the efficiency of Agrobacteruim-mediated and biolistic plant transformation and development of new methods for the gene transfer using nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and other nanopolymers. Respective transformation techniques for transgenic plant production with the desired traits such as herbicides or insect pest resistance have been developed (barley, finger millet, sugar beet, potato, flax, tobacco, false flax and soybean). The sequential study of the mutations of cytoskeletal proteins in the formation of plant resistance to herbicides with antimitotic activity allowed him to obtain mutant plants, isolate altered tubulin genes responsible for herbicide resistance and, finally, to obtain plants resistant to these chemicals. New safe and environmentally friendly marker system for the selection of the transformed plant lines based on mutant tubulin gene was developed. Transgenic plants were used as “green factories” for the production of such pharmacalogically valuable product as lactoferrin.

Under his supervision new methods of nanobiotechnology have been developed recently, namely the production (“green synthesis”) of nanoparticles and quantum dots by biological systems.

With his participation new varieties of finger millet, sweet sorghum, false flax and miscanthus for biofuel production were obtained employing molecular breeding approaches. Original technologies for bioethanol production from sweet sorghum and finger millet were developed as well as the technology of biodiesel production based from bioethanol and false flax (camelina) oils for engines has been developed and the pilot equipment has been constructed.

Ya.B. Blume is Editor-in-chief of “Cytology and Genetics” (from 2006) and “The Open Agriculture Journal” (from 2017). Author and co-author more than 280 research publications, 11 patent inventions and 9 plant varieties.

Prof. Lal received his MS/M Phil in Physics/Biophysics from JNU, India, Ph.D. in Neurobiology from UAB, and postdoctoral training at Caltech. He held faculty positions at the University of Chicago and UCSB and then the Director of the Center of Nanomedicine and professorships in Medicine, Biophysical Sciences and Cell Physiology at the University of Chicago. Currently, he holds joint professorships in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science, and is the co-Director for the Center for Excellence in Nanomedicine and Engineering at UCSD. He is a Fellow of AAAS (the American Association for Advancement of Science) and a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
